Asylum seekers waiting for the decision on asylum are not included in the statistics of this website since they do not have an official place of domicile in Finland. In 2019, altogether 4,550 persons applied for asylum in Finland. This was significantly fewer than in 2015 when the number of applicants totaled 32,476 persons. In 2019, less than one-third of the applicants were was from Iraq. The next largest groups of applicants were nationals of Somalia, Turkey, and Afghanistan.

In 2019, Helsinki received a total of 676 people who were either quota refugees or asylum seekers (or their family members) that had been granted a residence permit. Many asylum seekers move from their first placement to some other municipalities, usually to bigger cities.
